A FEW OF MY PLEIN AIR WATERCOLORS FROM MY TRIP TO ITALY

On a recent trip to Italy I painted many watercolors, 20 altogether.   Plein Air painting is a challenge that I love.  Some have been sold, others are available.

Sketchcrawl, Jan. 19, 2013 - downtown Austin.  Many PleinAir Austin members and friends gathered on Congress Avenue and nearby spots to sketch.  Weather was beautiful, sunny and fairly warm.  Lots of good sketches to share over lunch at Hickory St. Restaurant.

Waterloo Watercolor Group is currently holding its juried show at the Corridor of Art.  I was pleased and honored to be awarded Best in Show for the 2012 Spring Show for my painting "Lady in Pink".  another painting "Blue Interior with Red" was also juried into the show.
I got Best in Show Fall 2011 and had not expected to win two consecutive awards.

Plein Air Painting Competition - 2nd place award

Last weekend I was in a plein air painting competion in Round Rock, Texas.  The artists painted various scenes around the old downtown area with a number of buildings both old and new.  On the main street I painted a building which is now a popular restaurant.  It has a combination of brick and stone work.  The the early morning sunlight produced some interesting shadows especially in the doorway.  The first painting depicts the street with the iconic Round Rock water tower in the background.  This painting was awarded the 2nd prize in this competition.  I also painted a close-up view of the door and entry way which I think is a stronger painting!  Of course I was not the judge.

Plein Air Paintings, Provence. In May I spent 2 weeks in France with good friends, also artists. The paintings below were done in the beautiful villages and charming countryside in Provence.

Recent Award Winner 'The Watchers' watercolor

On my return trip from Long Island I lost my camera, somehow, with some good pics that I had hoped to paint from.  Had to use visual memory for paintings.  Here is one from a memory of early evening - with a little imagination thrown in.  This painting "The Watchers" won 3rd prize in the WWG Fall juried show. Cash prize money paid for the replacement camera which eased the pain a little!

Plein Paintings from North Fork, L.I. Trip

Visit to the North Fork, Long Island

Recently I visited friends Carol and Ted at their summer home in East Marion, L.I., N.Y.  The North Fork of Long Island is surrounded by water on three sides with lots of sailboats and watercraft of all kinds.  I painted each day.  The view of Shelter Island was a favorite as well as the picturesque buildings in the town of Orient.

In May 2010, I was awarded the Dee Phillips Memorial prize for transparent watercolor for my painting "Card Players".  It was an honor to receive this award.
